How to fill out a PDF form without Adobe

A real fillable PDF carries named fields — text, checkboxes, radios, choices — that readers know how to fill. Many documents that look like forms are just pictures of forms. Knowing which one you have decides the tool.

Last reviewed October 2026. If a page like this is ever rewritten, the date moves with it.

Is the file really a form?

Open it in any PDF reader and click a blank. If the cursor lands in it, the file is fillable — there is a field there with a name and a type, and the cursor just found it.

If nothing happens, the file is a picture of a form: a scan, a Word export with blank underlines, a contract with dots where a signature goes. Those files contain no fields and have nothing to fill; typing words onto the page is the right tool, and the PDF editor does it by adding a text box where the blank should be.

Fill, then decide whether to flatten

Filling changes only the field values — the page content, fonts and images are untouched, so the layout never moves. What remains is the choice between keeping the fields editable and flattening them.

Flattening rewrites the field values as ordinary page content and removes the interactivity. The answers become part of the page, so they travel safely to any reader and cannot be changed in the field that held them. Flatten for anything you are submitting; keep editable for anything somebody else still has to fill in.

What is not supported

Text fields (single- and multi-line), checkboxes (including single ticks inside a group), radio buttons and dropdown or choice lists are handled. A certificate-based signature field is not filled here, and any field-level JavaScript (calculations, validations) is not executed — the value you type is kept as is.

A form that relies on calculation to fill its own totals will need those totals re-entered before you flatten it.

Do it now, free

A fillable PDF carries named fields that a reader can type into — name, address, dates, checkboxes, choices. This reads those fields, lets you fill them in the browser, and saves a completed copy. The file never leaves the tab.

Questions

Is my form uploaded?

No. The file is opened, filled and saved entirely in this tab. There is no server — you can verify in the network tab.

My PDF looks like a form but has no fields. Can I fill it?

Not with this. That file is a picture of a form, not a form. Use the PDF editor to add text boxes where the blanks should be.

Should I flatten after filling?

Flatten for anything you are submitting — the values become part of the page and cannot be changed in the field. Keep editable when somebody else still has to fill the rest.

Will the filled values print?

Yes. Fields are part of the PDF and print with the page, whether flattened or not, on every viewer and every printer.
